To create a smoke effect, you’ll need to convert your image into a smart object. You can do this by selecting Layer, Create a smart object. The next step in the process involves adding the layer of debris and configuring it so that it looks like smoke. The layers of debris are layers that you can add to your illustration without affecting the original image in any way whatsoever. To do this, go to Layer, New setting layer, Debris and configure it as shown below: Check that you have also ticked the two boxes under “Add a layer mask”.
